These engaging exhibits in the Visitor Center of the Santa Ysabel Nature Preserve help to educate visitors about the unique plants and wildlife of the preserve as well as the complex history of the region.
The lobby area features a large landscape mural of the preserve with dimensional text. There is also a panel and digital interface that helps visitors locate and orient themselves.
The splash page of the digital interface feature a beauty shot of the preserve and helps visitors learn about this special place.
This custom-made barn door features direct-printed text and allows the staff to close off the exhibit area when necessary.
As visitors enter the main room, they are greeted by an immersive exhibit complete with animated foliage, nature-based audio and custom-modeled artifacts.
This area focuses on the exceptional biodiversity of the preserve. Dimensional maps are used to put the region in both a global and statewide context.
Layers of landscape photography help to immerse viewers as they learn about the importance of rivers to the wildlife that lives at Santa Ysabel. A custom map illustrates the path each river takes as they wind through the region and empty into the Pacific Ocean.
Visitors are challenged to guide a marble through this custom-made game in order to simulate the flow of the rivers and learn about the various obstacles that stand in the way.
In this corner, visitors are given a peek under the surface of the preserve to learn about the rocks and geology of the area. Tactile artifacts are incorporated into the graphics to provide a truly hands-on experience.
This wall of spinning panels is focused on the history of the region. Maps and photos help tell the stories of the people who have inhabited the area over the years.
Here, graphics and artifacts are coordinated to go into greater detail about some of the more interesting animals that live on the preserve. In additional to the static components, additional graphics pull out from the countertop and a custom digital interface interprets the display in front of the viewer.
A touch screen is mounted in the countertop and mirrors the display of wildlife. Large buttons invite visitors to tap a silhouette and learn more about the animals they can see before them.
Simple detail screens feature a photograph and fun fact about each animal.
Working under the exhibit designer and graphics manager at Formations, I was the lead graphic designer on this project; developing the look and overall approach of the graphics for the exhibits as well as designing the bulk of the layouts. I also managed the production process by working with our CAD and fabrications departments as well as outside vendors and contractors.
